My dad and I have an ongoing theme of naming every medieval Bavarian town we encounter as the true resemblance of the Grimm brother’s Hansel and Gretel. Safe to say this one is definitely top of the list, and I will admit, I have most definitely joked about waiting for my European prince here.
About Rothenberg
The town dates way back to the Celtic Middle Ages and is surrounded by a defensive wall and tower that you can walk along for full, loop views of the cobblestoned streets and colourful buildings. There’s a total of 46 historical towers that continue for about four kilometres. They can all be accessed via steps from inside the town.
How to get here?
Rothenburg is easiest to access from Nuremberg or Frankfurt and is only a two-hour drive from each, making it the perfect day trip spot to add to your itinerary. For transport options and prices check this website.
The most famous sights in Rothenburg are the Plönlein landmark, Siebers Tower and Kobolzeller Gate.
These buildings are the first thing you see when you search the town on Google – and fun fact! – it actually appeared in Walt Disney’s Pinocchio (see what I’m saying about fairytale vibes)
If you book a tour, this landmark is usually the starting point for the walking tours and is just outside the town hall.
Make your way over to the Town Hall and Marktplatz square for shops, boutiques, restaurants and cafes amongst some incredible architecture.
From there, you can wander the Medieval town and explore the never-ending cobblestoned pathways, famous Christmas shops and Teddy Bear stores.
Definitely do get yourself a hot chocolate (preferably with whipped cream and a shot of Baileys) to keep you company while you roam the streets.
Christmas in Rothenberg
If you’re visiting during the Christmas period be sure to check out the Rothenburg christmas markets, open from around midday until 8pm. They’re famous for Schneeball pastry, so make sure you get your hands on one of them – they’re really delish!
