When to Visit?
Summer in Baden Baden is usually balmy but still cool, with temperatures anywhere between 13-24 degrees. In Winter, it’s usually 4-6 degrees and can get down to -1 degrees.
If you’re wanting to experience the fog-stricken folklore forest, relax in the thermal baths and enjoy a good cup of mulled wine at the Christmas markets, November – January is definitely the time for you to visit.
However, if you’re looking for a more outdoorsy experience with the rose garden in full bloom, it’d be best for you to visit in June – September.
Despite being a smaller town, the region actually offers so many attractions and activities that planning can get really overwhelming, so I’ve narrowed it down to the very best.

SPA
Baden-Baden is one of the great 11 spa towns and offers both an indoor (Friedrichsbad) and an outdoor (Caracalla) Spa. The thermal water comes from the Florentinerberg spring and is actually highly beneficial for personal well-being and recovery. It’s about 20 euros for a two-hour ticket or 35 euros for an all-day pass.
A pre-booking is not required for these spas, so feel free to decide on the day.
CASTLES AND CHURCHES
The Hohenbaden Castle is the oldest castle in the region, built in 1102, with secret dungeons and hallways to discover. The hike up the steps is most definitely humbling but is so worth the panoramic views, especially since it’s free to visit!
For the grandest church in the region, visit the Evangelische Stadtkirche, located near yet another fountain and garden. Take advantage of the free entry!
HISTORICAL SITES
Dating back to Roman times, Baden Baden is now listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the old town, you’ll be sure to stumble upon several heritage galleries, houses, fountains and museums.
Trinkhalle, an impressive classical 90-metre walkway with 14 murals and an enchanting entrance garden. Entrance is free!
Visit the most well-known French-style casino, with daily guided tours and dining on offer. The building alone is impressive.
Be sure to check out Kurhaus and its gardens and Festival hall (Festspielhaus) for more stunning architecture. Both halls have been so well preserved, you feel as if you’ve been transported back in time
NATURE SIGHTS
The Lichtentaler Allee is a narrow nature trail, gorgeous in all seasons, with fountains, a river, flowers and connections to several galleries and arts precincts. There’s walking tours and open air events year round. If you’re interested, check out this website for details.
Follow the pathway all the way up the mountain (through the folklore forest as my sister and I like to call it) and you’ll find the funicular that takes you up to Merkur Mountain, one of my favourite things to do! It’s a 668-meter-high summit with hiking trails, barbecue areas, a delish restaurant and a super cool panoramic viewing tower (that is honestly kinda spooky – think Cocaine Bear vibes) and paragliding opportunities.
FOR THE TASTEBUDS
As always, I’m starting with dessert, because this place has the best homemade cakes in the region. Café König is the oldest cafe in Baden Baden and is usually open as early as 8:30 am until 6:30 pm, so that you can fit in several sweet treats during your day.

THE CHRISTMAS SEASON
Baden Baden is home to very quaint and charming Christmas Markets, located in the heart of the city, at the front of Kurhaus. Nearly every restaurant and cafe you find will be selling mulled wine and winter treats. There’s also an ice-skating rink in the Augustaplatz from the 18th of November until the 8th of January.

Just a final note: if you’re ever in doubt, it’s a very walkable town. I’d totally recommend just wandering the city and discovering it on your own. There’s so much to stumble on!
